A. Meaning of assessment
The term assessment came from the
Latin word Assess which means to determine , estimate or judge the value of , to evaluate.
The term assessment is a process of
gathering information related to some objective or goal for
evaluation .
Assessment collects both quantitative and qualitative data.
For example a teacher assess the class test,
unit test internal test , monthly test , half yearly test and then he/she
formulate a report card at the end of the session
Quantitative data includes marks ,
grades ,percentile etc etc
Qualitative data includes behaviour
, personality , body language, activeness etc etc
NOTE- Assessment is subset of evaluation .
B. Objectives of assessment tools

C. Types of assessment tools
(1)- formative and summative
assessment :--
Formative assessment occurs at all the
stages of learning process because it is used to continuously monitor the
effectiveness of learning process .
Example -- assessment during the
ongoing session of the class or any ongoing activity /test /topic
Summative assessment is that process
used to measure the level of success/proficiency that has been obtained at the
end of an unit , syllabus , exam by comparing it against some standards
/benchmarks
example-
assessment at the end of ongoing session of the class or any ongoing
activity test, topic or semester exam .
(2)--- Self assessment and Peer
assessment
Self evaluation means '' own
evaluation '' here the students evaluate their own learning and progress in
their respective knowledge ,
skills, interest attitude, etc etc , Self evaluation helps the students to
develop a sense of Independence and take responsibility for their own learning.
Peer evaluation
refers to evaluation of a student by
another student , this can be conducted in pairs or in a groups , Peer
evaluation promotes cooperative learning environment in the classroom ,
students also get opportunity to hear and exchange their work with others.
(3)---home assignment :- That
assignment which are done at home.
(4)---Classroom activity :- That
activity which are done at class room
(5)---Rubric :- Rubric is a set of
criteria for student's work that include description of levels of performance
quality related to that criteria.
(6)---Field trip :- Field trips are
educational trips where student are given opportunity to explore the
environment and deal with real life practical life
(7)---portfolio :- Portfolio gives an idea about overall expression and
impression of a person's growth in his/her career .
A portfolio/professional portfolio
includes evidences and certificate of his/her career, work of experience ,
professional resume etc etc.
(8)---checklist and rating scales
:- The measure the qualitative
dimensions like behaviour ,attitude ,
experience , knowledge of student

(9)--- projects work :- Project
work are type of activity where user can create /modify the given task
(10)--- problem solving task :- Problem
solving task are complex situation where some problems were presented before
the student and the student are advised to
find the solution of that problem

experiment :- Lab activity an experiment are used to provide practical
knowledge to the student
